 Statement

The work in this show includes pieces from the past two years. My four newest paintings were created in the last three months and are titled “Lady and her Pet Plant Uglow”, “Jenny My First Best Friend/Waiting for Rain”, “In the Still With You”, and “Clocking In/Clocking Out”. At first I couldn’t find a line of connection between these new paintings, they just felt like pieces I had been mulling on for a little while and were most excited to get out of my head. But, when I was about halfway through my painting process I saw the thread, the influence that quarantine had on my work. They are connected by ideas of rest and pause. Of being present.

I imagined a person who had so much newfound time at home that they became inseparable from their plant. And a person who decided to dress up in their matching rain coat and hat and wait for the rain, just because. Another who realized their cheek matched the flower they’ve passed everyday and maybe they were meant to be. And someone whose travel plans were halted so they visited a new place every night while they slept. Each piece is a reflection of a small moment of joy, appreciation, or contemplation. I hope these paintings give these small moments a chance to be big moments for a little while.
